Implementing Integrity Management Principles for Enhanced Reliability in the Caspian Region

Date & Time: Wednesday, April 10th – 14:00 pm

  • Gary Yoho, Principal Consultant
  • Mike Westlund, Director, Integrity Services
  • Phillip Nidd, Director, Major Projects

This paper presents a baseline integrity assessment of the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) which was conducted with state-of-the-art Acoustic Resonance Technology. The assessment involved a comprehensive evaluation of ILI data, cathodic protection (CP) surveys, bending strain reports, and associated construction and integrity records. The principal aim was to ascertain the presence of conditions within the system that could potentially pose integrity threats, and to reevaluate the proposed reassessment interval in light of these identified risks.

The baseline integrity assessment meticulously examined six widely recognized industry threats: External Corrosion, Internal Corrosion, Mechanical Damage, Manufacturing, Construction and Fabrication Defects, Weather-related and Outside Forces (Geohazards and Bending Strain), and Pressure Cycling (fatigue). This analysis formed the basis for devising inspection strategies, identifying immediate investigative requirements, and providing recommendations to mitigate the potential for pipeline leaks or ruptures in accordance with a suitable reassessment plan.

This paper will elaborate on the advantages of pivotal assessment and monitoring technologies. These included the deployment of Deformation ILI tools with Inertial Monitoring Units (IMU) and ROV surveys for geotechnical events. Additionally, the collection of inclinometer data for geohazard management was advised. A revised global buckling analysis was also suggested, aligning with updated industry standards. Continuous evaluation of AC potential locations and cathodic protection levels were further recommended to ensure sustained pipeline integrity.

Gary Yoho – Principal Consultant

Gary’s career in the pipeline industry has spanned more than 40 years. During that time, he has engaged with pipeline design, construction, and operations, both onshore and offshore at many different levels domestically and internationally. A two-and-half year employee with Dynamic Risk as Principal Consultant, the bulk of Gary’s career has been spent with operators, both large and small. For the last decade, he has focused on pipeline integrity, serving as Manager of Asset integrity for two different midstream/upstream operators. Under the Dynamic Risk banner, Gary has led or contributed to engineering assessments and risk evaluations for operating pipelines, pipeline conversions, pipeline return-to-service and regulatory mandated activities in addition to the writing of technical procedures for pipeline maintenance and operations. Gary currently is serving as Dynamic Risk’s point consultant for pipeline issues relating to the transportation of gaseous hydrogen.
