Banff Pipeline Workshop 2023

Dynamic Risk will be participating in the Banff Pipeline Workshop taking place at the Banff Center AB, from April 3 – April 6, 2023

The Banff Pipeline Workshop is a biennial forum on managing pipeline integrity. Launched in 1993 with 65 participants, the workshop has grown over the decades to become the hub for more than 1000 participants, including leaders in the pipeline industry as well as regulators, academics, and vendors.

Working Groups:

Working Group 1: Energy Diversification

Steve Biagiotti – Chief Engineer

Tuesday, April 4th – 10:30 am MST | Steve Biagiotti, Chief Engineer; Haneen Alhaddad, Operations Team Lead; Santiago Urrea, Director Integrity Services (NDT Global)

Given the breadth, diversity and experience of our panelist, this session will ask the big questions about how to accelerate the energy transition; how our industry should be preparing, and if there is an opportunity to accelerate to meet our ambitious 2030 and 2050 goals. Some of the questions we’ll attempt to answer involve closing the new energy competency gap, how to get regulations, standards and public support to all align, as well as what we can learn from the European head start on the energy transition.

Each panelist will be given an opening question to answer by our facilitators. Other panelists will have an opportunity to add their perspectives before opening for a question-and-answer period from the attendees.

Mr. Biagiotti is Chief Engineer for Dynamic Risk, participating in the leadership and support of hydrogen transformation projects. He is a Professional Metallurgical Engineer (PE) with more than 35 years of Oil & Gas corrosion industry experience, with his graduate thesis focusing on stress corrosion cracking, and more than 45 technical publications. He has worked for leading industry operators and service providers, supporting projects worldwide. The transition to a hydrogen economy is creating a unique opportunity to leverage all of his lessons learned about hydrogen influenced degradation and cracking to a new and challenging application.

Working Group 4: Facility Integrity

Francisco Barrera – Principal Consultant

Francisco Barrera

Wednesday, April 5th – 8:30 am MST

This working group provides participants with the opportunity to work with their peers to advance and advocate for tangible and practical initiatives that improve the efficiency and lower the cost of Facility Integrity Management.

As Principal Consultant at Dynamic Risk, Francisco is responsible for leading the technical engineering for project delivery within our Risk and Reliability department. Francisco has over sixteen years of experience developing and implementing risk solutions, including engineering, quality control, and client interface. Francisco has worked for many of the top pipeline companies in North America through Pipeline Transmission, Distribution, Facility, and Offshore Risk and Integrity Analysis. He proactively identifies where systems are most likely to encounter issues or fail, determines corresponding consequences, and develops strategic solutions to improve pipeline asset reliability and safety. In addition, Francisco actively collaborates and contributes with multidisciplinary teams to deliver solutions to companies that will enhance efficiency and decision-making.

Working Group 7: Risk Management

Samah Hasan – Director, Risk & Engineering

Samah Hasan

Wednesday, April 5th – 3:30 pm MST | Samah Hasan, Director, Risk & Engineering; Henry Lin, Integrity Engineer; Dan Williams, Principal Consultant; Mia Kalivoda, Operations Lead, Technology Consulting; Han Wu, Director, Technology Solutions

This working group provides participants with discussions in the following sessions:

CSA Z662-23 Annex B revision and application; Quantitative risk assessment; and Risk Management

Samah Hasan is a Senior Integrity Engineer with over a decade of experience in the Oil and Gas industry. She has extensive experience in pipeline risk, integrity and threat assessments. Her technical specialties include integrity assessments, mathematical modeling, and risk-based analysis. She is currently responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Engineering Services teams – Asset Risk, Engineering Assessments and Risk & Reliability. She leads multi-discipline engineering teams across Canada and the US, specializing in pipeline threat assessments, pipeline product release simulations including outflow and dispersion models for Environmental and Safety consequence assessments, pipeline qualitative and quantitative risk assessments (Environmental, Individual and Social risk assessments) including serving as expert witness for regulatory hearing support. She is accountable for all aspects of execution and successful completion of projects across the Dynamic Risk Engineering Services portfolio, approving final client deliverables and providing technical and functional expertise to help clients recognize project goals. Samah earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Calgary in 2009, is a registered Professional Engineer in the province of Alberta.

Working Group 8: Inspection & Monitoring

Mike Westlund – Director, Integrity Services

Mike Westlund

Thursday, April 6th – 8:30 am MST | Mike Westlund, Director, Integrity Services; Dawinder Kaur, Integrity Engineer

This working group provides participants with increased understanding of technologies and methodologies available to manage the integrity and environmental risks to “Energy Transition” pipelines, such as Hydrogen and CO2.

As a Principal Consultant with Dynamic Risk, Mike has 22 years of experience in various pipeline integrity-related roles. He provides guidance, mentoring and technical oversight to our project teams, conducts engineering studies and investigations, prepares and
present findings and recommends information to report to Dynamic Risk’s client’s senior leadership. Previously he focused on pipeline integrity, data analysis and R&D for the first generation EMAT ILI tool. Mike also possesses a significant amount of field experience including SCC integrity excavations, environmental studies, and cathodic protection. Additionally, he holds a BSc from the University of Calgary and holds a Level II Cathodic Protection Technician designation with NACE International.

Tutorial: Pipeline Risk Assessment

Dan Williams – Principal Consultant

Francisco Barrera – Principal Consultant

Monday, April 3rd – Morning Tutorial

This tutorial is designed to provide participants with an understanding of Risk Assessment (as a key component of Risk Management) in preparation for active participation in Working Group 7, Pipeline Risk Management. This tutorial will provide an overview of pipeline risk assessment concepts, approaches, trending and considerations.

Dan is a Principal Consultant at Dynamic Risk where he is responsible for providing technical leadership in pipeline engineering assessment and risk management services. This includes providing subject matter expert guidance on the development of pipeline risk algorithms (leveraging in-line inspection, direct assessment and GIS inputs), conducting threat-based engineering assessments, assessing in-line inspection performance validation and reporting on risk results as actionable risk reports that can support effective decision-making for clients. This work has also included providing regulatory support in these areas. This experience is supported by a detailed knowledge of pipeline threat susceptibility factors and consequence considerations. Dan has provided the technical leadership for successful risk algorithm implementations and engineering assessments that have been conducted with both liquids and gas transmission pipeline clients in Canada and the United States. Dan is a licensed professional engineer with a Bachelor of Engineering Science (B.E.Sc.) in Materials Engineering and has over 30 years combined experience in pipe manufacturing and pipeline integrity.
